Happy Vaisakhi

Vaisakhi is a special day celebrated in India, by people of all different faiths! It is celebrated at the start of the new Harvest, and this year it falls on today’s date, Monday 13th April!

It is an especially important day for farmers it’s the day they give thanks for their abundance of crops they were able to harvest that year. This is also a time to pray for another great and fortunate year ahead. India is a very hot and dry country, which is why this day is important to pray for good fortune and better crops in the following year.

On this day the streets are full with joyous celebrations such as dancing, singing and parades. Families and communities get together to eat, dance, celebrate and pray. Many Sikhs choose to be baptised on this day.

Vasaikhi commemorates the day that Sikhism was born.
